Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How does wireless compare to a Dialup Connection?
Dialup connections operate at a maximum speed of 53 kbps under ideal conditions. The average dialup connection is about 40 kbps. With 4fast.net's wireless your maximum speed will be much faster -- up to 512 kbps. And if you have a second phone line just for Internet service, you will no longer need it and you will save on your monthly phone bill.

  2. How does Wireless DSL compare to traditional DSL?
Since DSL is not available in Yreka, we must rely on knowledge from other areas. From other ISPs we hear that DSL has more limited availability than wireless because of lack of phone network infrastructure. DSL is asymmetric (fast download, slower upload). In addition, the speed is dependent on distance from the phone switch.

  3. What equipment is required?
You purchase the equipment and can install it yourself, or we can install it. You need a single computer with a network card (NIC). If you don't have a NIC, we can install one for you for an additional fee. If you want to connect more than one computer, you will need a local area network (LAN). We sell and install LANs. Contact us for details and pricing.

  4. Does this service use a phone line?
No. You will be able to receive and place phone calls through your phone line while you are on the Internet.

  5. What about security for always on systems?
We recommend that all users use reputable anti-virus software. You will be assigned a public, static IP address, or if requested, we will give you a non-public static IP for extra security. However, we do recommend a firewall to protect you from unwanted Internet traffic.

  6. Do cordless phones interfere with this system?
Some cordless phones, baby monitors, and other wireless devices may interfere with your radio performance. You may need to isolate the radio from the phone base and headset or change the channel on your device.

  7. What speeds will I get?
Actual speeds may be less than the maximum rate and vary based on a number of factors, including the performance of your computer, Internet congestion, and the speeds of web sites you access.

  8. Can I see the equipment? How big is the radio? How big is the antenna? Where will the antenna be installed?
Stop by our office or view the pictures on our web site. The outdoor antenna is 11" x 3" x 3". The antenna will be mounted to the exterior of the building.

  9. Can I install the equipment myself? If I do, is the price less?
If your location has good signal, you may install the outdoor antenna yourself. FCC regulations allow individuals to install their own equipment. There will be no installation charges if the customer installs the equipment.

  10. Can I connect more than one computer?
Yes. You will need a local area network, and we recommend a firewall router. If you would like assistance in setting up your network, please contact us for pricing.

  11. Do I get my own IP address? Can I host a server?
Yes, you get a static IP address that can be used for VPN connections, personal servers, etc. We also offer server co-location and virtual hosting.

  12. Can I keep my old email address?
You can if you own your own domain name. If you are switching from another provider, check with your previous provider to determine your options and any fees.

  13. Is a contract required?
Yes. A 12-month service commitment is required with all sign-ups, with month to month renewal thereafter.
